Moving from California to New York has been a huge transition. Overall, people on the east coast eat more fast food, skip more meals, and generally don’t relax as often. There is one thing that both places have in common, even the healthiest of people tend to eat too much sugar!

Sugar does not just mean actual sugar that you put in tea, or find in cakes and candy. It is also the over consumption of fresh and dried fruit, bread, pasta, juice, and white rice and potatoes. Many people skip meals, which leads to an imbalance of blood sugar levels and constant cravings. What the body is really asking for is more nourishment, and simple carbs are a quick fix. It is possible to stop this spiral and get rid of your sweet tooth!

In the meantime, get ready for a simple and refreshing desert that happens to be nutrient dense desert, and will satisfy even the heftiest of sugar cravings!

chocolate chia pudding

2 tbsp chia seeds

1 3/4 cups organic coconut milk

2 medjool dates, pitted

3 tbsp raw cacao powder

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp real vanilla extract

pinch of Himalyan salt

1/4 cup toasted hazelnuts or walnuts (or favorite nut combo), chopped

1/4 cup fresh organic blueberries or raspberries

optional: 1/4 cup of hemp seeds

directions: Grind chia seeds until powdery. Blend coconut milk and the dates in a food processor, until smooth.  Add 2 tbsp of the cacao, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.  Blend to combine, then taste and adjust, adding more cacao if needed. Add ground chia seeds and blend until smooth. Pour into small dishes and chill for at least 30 minutes. Once chilled, garnish with toasted hazelnuts and berries.
