11 foods to include in your diet

Happy 11-11-11! n honor of a day that only comes once every 100 years, I’ve chosen 11 foods that will support overall health, vitality, and well-being.

Coconut Oil
Quality fats support healthy cell membranes and coconut oil is rich with lauric acid which is anti-parastic. Also, it contains medium chain triglycerides which help the body burn fat.

Kale
This leafy green powerhouse is rich in minerals, especially magnesium which is a mineral that most people don’t get enough of.

Ghee
Clarified butter is made by separating the lactose and the casein, which means even people with dairy allergies or intolerances can enjoy ghee. It’s lubricating for the intestines and food for the cells.

Eggs
Contrary to the often bad rap eggs get, they are actually supportive of healthy cholesterol levels since they contain lecithin which helps cholesterol move through the blood. The quality is very important, so always choose eggs that are free range or at least organic.

Apples
Many fruits are very sweet and can tweak out your blood sugar levels. Apples carry a heavy fiber load, which means they are absorbed a bit more slowly by your blood sugar.

Green Super Foods
Choose a blend with veggies, fruit, spirulina, blue green algae, etc. These nutrient dense foods cleanse the blood and support overall immunity.

Sauerkraut
This fermented cabbage condiment is swimming in healthy bacteria and enzymes that support digestion and immune health.

Chia Seeds
Chia is a rich source of heart, brain, and cell supporting omega-3 fatty acids. These seeds are also mucilaginous which means that they help heal and soothe your mucus membranes.

Pumpkin seeds
Most plant food don’t contain zinc, so pumpkin seeds are an ideal source for vegetarians.

Raw goat and sheep milk, kefir, cheese, and yogurt
Raw milk is a nourishing source of healthy fat and protein and has the added benefit of being loaded with enzymes and bacteria.

Tahini
Sesame seeds are a rich source of calcium and magnesium and this creamy spread is a rich source of protein for vegetarians and raw foodies.

Grass Fed Beef
Cows that graze on their natural food source, grass, are healthier and even produce CLA, which is a benefical fatty acid for heart health.

10 Things You Thought Were Healthy

smoothie

As a nutritionist, my clients are constantly sharing health “facts” that they learned from the internet, friends, or TV. With so much information available, sometimes random or outdated statements end up as common knowledge. Often, these “facts” don’t support optimal health and can even be harmful.

springing forward

Spring is a favorite time of year among many foodies, the scarcity of winter is over and the bounty of fresh fruit and veggies is on the horizon. This difference of seasons is far more glaring now that I have transplanted from San Francisco to NYC. I always knew that California had the bounty of year round produce, and I could not have imagined a farmers market with nothing but apples and root veggies. This is truly seasonal eating. What better time to discuss the difference between East and West and also offer some updates about Nutrition Evolution.

GMO, our right to know!

I recently spoke out against GMOs (genetically modified organisms) at a city hall rally in NYC and it was truly inspirational. How many times do we find ourselves complaining about the way things are but not taking any action? I feel that the time for action is NOW. We are hitting many types of global food crises and it’s up to each of us to do something about it! Why are GMO’s bad and why should you care?

COMING SOON, UPDATED SITE CONCEPT

Nutrition evolution is finally getting an overhaul! In the coming year I will be offering videos, classes, workshops, and beyond. I am on a mission to educate and inspire people to take charge of their health. I am moving beyond one-on-one conultations.  I will still offer consults and programs via skype. The larger mission will be to spread the word about holistic health, gluten free living via in-person classes and online videos. I will continue to write monthly blog articles, but will offer shorter bursts of information via videos. I’m excited to see where this goes, and to turn on even more people to the idea that we can transform our health and our lives through our dietary and lifestyle choices.

Much health, Shoshanna!

fall into health

Fall is here, bringing with it cooling temperatures splashes of color on trees, and a bounty of red, orange, yellow, and purple at the farmers markets. Due to the changing weather, now is the perfect time to prepare yourself for cold and flu season. People who get the flu are those with weakened immune systems. So instead of waiting around to get sick, use this time to build up your immunity. How?

sustainable food movement growing

http://www.grist.org/article/2010-08-13-the-meat-industry-feels-the-heat-as-the-sustainable-food-movemen/ This is excellent news! Ethical and local sources of meat/poultry are becoming more widely available. The movement is growing! Truly pasture-raised animals don’t need antibiotics since they eat the food that their body is meant to and they get plenty of sunshine (vitamin D, crucial for the immune systems of mammals).

the “g” word

I am ready for the next stage of nutrition evolution. People who have interacted with me for any length of time know what the “g” word is. I’ve been waiting to unveil it here in my blog while I redo this website. I cannot hold back any longer, the time has come for me to talk about GLUTEN! What is gluten and why does it have me so concerned?
